My Cousin Ruben

A Poem by George Rivera
He went to war in Vietnam
Left a boy and came back a man
I asked him how he came back sane
He just said he was glad to be home again
Then he said he let it go, just let it go
My cousin said just let it go
He lived in a big city for a while
But then came back to his hometown
Where everybody knew his smile
A man without worries, never down
He just said, let it go, just let it go
My cousin said, just let it go
He knew our family sometimes had trouble
That life was short and to stop our quarrel
He wanted us to come together
And not let such small things matter
Just let it go, just let it go
My cousin said, just let it go
He was at peace when I last saw him
Saying it all would be alright to all of his kin
Told him that I loved him and held his hand
He said he knew and for me to understand
To let it go, just let it go
My cousin said, just let it go
I’ll never forget my Columbus cousin
I loved him like I loved no other
I always remember what he said
It rings even now in my head
Let it go, just let it go
Just let it go
